[Fantasy Football N’ Stuff] Waiver Wire Pick-Up of the Week

After a great Monday night performance against the Denver Broncos, Ryan Grant is the pick-up of the week. However, I am a little reserved about it. The same thing happened a few weeks ago when Brandon Jackson lost the starting job to Deshawn Wynn. After that Wynn has been disappointing and unpredictable.

The only reason Grant got an opportunity, was because of Wynn’s season ending injury. That puts Grant in the same position Wynn was in.

Brandon Jackson, who has thus far been a disappointing, is going to be active and playing next Sunday. He should split the carries along with Grant and we can’t forget Morency.

We also have to remember Grant’s 100+ yard rushing performance was against the leagues worst defense, who on average gives up 166 yards per game rushing.

Grant will have to prove himself to me before I become a believer. Next week the Packers are against #17th ranked rushing defense Kansas City.

[Fantasy Cafe] Ryan Grant

Ryan Grant is my sleeper. Starting running back for the Green Bay Packers. Everyone saw Grant’s talent on Monday night as he racked up 100 yards against Denver’s lousy run defense. Undoubtedly some managers in dire need of running back depth have already visited the waiver wire to grab …

[Fantasy Football N’ Stuff] Contenders and Pretenders in the AFC

We are going into week 9 of the regular season. With it half over, you can start to see the playoff picture forming.

Who’s contending, and whos pretending?

AFC West

Pretender

Kansas City (4-3) The Chiefs are tied for first, almost by default. Larry Johnson has been suspect for the most part. The best player has been rookie Bowe, which I would be concerned about.

Contender

San Diego (4-3) They are the real deal and proved it yesterday by scoring 35 points in the first half against the Texans. With so many weapons on offense and defense, San Diego should easily win the division as expected

AFC North

Pretenders

Baltimore (4-3) Whether it’s Steve McNair or Kyle Boller, they have the same chances of winning. As long as McGahee can stay healthy and keep running they might have a chance.

Cleveland (4-3) Even though their offense has drastically improved, they still are the Browns. Having one of the worst defenses in the NFL will cost Cleveland several games down the road.

Contender

Pittsburgh (5-2) They did lose that heartbreaker to Denver, but the Steelers are pretty solid. With Ward coming back from injury, they have his consistent play, along with a great run game, and a strong defense.

AFC South

Pretender

Jacksonville (5-2) I think coaching may be a factor here. Why isn’t Jones-Drew getting the majority of the carries? Just watch him play and you’ll make a case for him too. They can’t do it all on the ground either. The defense is good, but not as solid as they need to be.

Contenders

Indianapolis (7-0) They are the colts! Even with injuries they find a way to win.

Tennessee (5-2) With Vince Young’s worst QB performance, they still found a way to win. The stats may not be pretty, but they do compete. They almost handing the Colts their only loss.

AFC East

Pretender

Buffalo (3-4) The Bills have found a way to win a couple of games, but this is hands down the Patriots division. Buffalo will be lucky to compete for a wildcard spot.

Contender

New England (8-0) Just have to get past the Colts, and sweet 16 may be there.

[Fantasy Footblog] Giants-Fins remind us it’s time to check forecasts

As significant as Marvin Harrison’s inactivity or Steven Jackson’s injury, Week Eight served up a not-so-subtle takeaway: The time has come to make weather forecasts a regular part of your Sunday morning pre-game routine. In case you missed it, the Giants and Dolphins met in rainy, soggy London on Sunday and combined for a mere 23 points, 187 passing yards and 492 yards of total offense. They also recorded seven fumbles and two missed field goals. Giants QB Eli Manning registered a mere 59 passing yards, which in turn held fantasy monster Plaxico Burress to a sad 14 receiving yards.

With the calendar turning to November in Week Nine, it is officially time to make sure you check the weather for your fantasy commodities on Sunday mornings. Rain, snow, wind…the wintry elements can wreak havoc on your lineup, much like an elite defense can.

I would never recommend finding a fantasy player who just so happens to play in Arizona or a dome, just to ensure favorable climate conditions. However, the weather could very well be the determining factor between two very comparable players. It most certainly can impact which direction you choose at kicker, and stormy weather often has a profound impact on passing games. You don’t want to start a fumbler in the rain, either. So just as you would check the inactive list while setting your lineup, put The Weather Channel in your favorite Sunday morning stops to make sure your fantasy stars won’t encounter prohibitive weather.

[Fantasy Football N’ Stuff] Fantasy Football Start’em Sit’em Week 8

Start ‘Em

QB Ben Roethlisberger- I found myself starting several Pittsburgh Steelers this week against the Bengals this week. I hope Cincy will keep it close enough for Big Ben to throw it a few times this week.

RB Steven Jackson- We’ve seen questionable ‘returns’ out of running backs like Rudi Johnson and Laurence Maroney, but Jackson might be a different story. Going against the #30 ranked rushing defense, the Browns shouldn’t give Jackson any trouble. Could be the easiest week for Marc Bulger yet.

WR Braylon Edwards- A lot of my teams are hurting, so getting Edwards back after the bye will really help. Edwards and the Browns against the Rams, should be able to do some damage. Look for Derek Anderson to have a big week too.

Sit ‘Em

Earnest Graham- If you were using Graham to plug in for injuries and bye weeks, it may be time to trade or drop him. He did well against the Lions, but remember, its the Lions. This week in Jacksonville he should get shutdown. After Arizona in week 9, they have the bye week. By then Bennett should be fully understanding of the offense and splitting the bulk of the carries with Graham.

Kenny Watson / Rudi Johnson- Rudi is back to being listed as doubtful, so that leaves Kenny Watson. The Steelers have allowed only 1 rushing TD this season. Along with that, they average only 75 yards allowed per game on the ground. That means trouble for Watson.

[Fantasy Footblog] QB Griese, TE Lee among top pickups of the week

Without question, RB Jesse Chatman will attract the most free-agent interest in your league this week after what happened to Ronnie Brown. However, if you’re looking deeper in this monster bye week (six teams are off), you have to give Bears QB Brian Griese and Packers TE Donald Lee a long, hard look.

Griese has been a fantasy standout since taking over for Rex Grossman. In four starts, he’s averaging a hair over 300 yards per game with eight touchdown passes, including two straight 300-yard games. Even more compelling is his Week Eight opponent. In six games this season, only one quarterback has failed to throw for multiple TD passes against the Lions, and that was the inherently challenged Tarvaris Jackson. Detroit allowed 313 yards and two scores to Josh McCown, 381 yards and four TDs to Donovan McNabb, 248 yards and two TDs to Jason Campbell and 316 yards and two TDs to Jeff Garcia. Heck, Griese himself posted 286 and a pair vs. Detroit…in his first start in two seasons. Clearly, Griese makes for a solid replacement for idle QBs Tony Romo, Kurt Warner or Matt Hasselbeck.

Tight end is an even more troubling spot this week, with Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Todd Heap and Alge Crumpler all taking the week off. Lee is already well on his way to career marks in every relevant receiving category in the Packers’ pass-heavy offense, and he may not have to share TE looks with Bubba Franks (knee) this week. Again, it’s the matchup that’s even more persuasive. Lee draws the Broncos, who were just torched by Heath Miller for two scores last week. It gets even better than that, though. In their last three games, they’ve ceded an astounding six TE touchdowns to Miller, Matt Spaeth, Antonio Gates and Dallas Clark.

[Fantasy Footblog] Make sure you have a backup for Marv on MNF

In case you didn’t catch the news on Saturday, Pro Bowl and fantasy stud WR Marvin Harrison is still gimpy enough to be considered a game-time decision on Monday night against the Jaguars. Marv is productive enough to roll the dice on, but only if you can make sure you have a MNF option to throw in your lineup if Marv is deactivated.

In most leagues, you will have to add that backup to your roster now, before Week 7 kicks off at 1 pm EST. My two suggestions are as follows:

1) Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez: With Marv out in Week 5, Gonzalez stepped in and hauled in seven catches for 71 yards, both of which were career highs. If Marv is out, you can simply plug-and-play with the new Gonzo.

2) Jaguars WR Reggie Williams: While Gonzalez may not be available, Williams probably is. He’s not an ideal play by any means, but if a Jags WR is going to score a TD, it will likely be Williams. His yardage leaves a lot to be desired, but he has scored in three of his last four outings. That’s enough to warrant rolling the dice on Marv until tomorrow night.

[FanHouse - Fantasy Football] Do You Think Vince Young Will Play Against the Texans?

Filed under: Texans, Titans, AFC South, Fantasy Football, NFL Injuries

Titans quarterback Vince Young is sick of talking about his quadriceps injury, but fantasy players, betting folk, and others interested in the Texans-Titans game want to know more about it. So here’s my talking out of my rear semi-educated guess on the subject matter:

Factors for Him Starting:
Past History. Titans coach Jeff Fisher tends to keep injury information very wishy-washy, and often former-Titan QB Steve McNair would not practice, or minimally practice, and still play the game. It is likely we find out the starter on game day. Young has been receiving treatment for his injury, and reports today said he threw the ball.

Vince Young and Houston. Though Young doesn’t want to talk about the game against Houston as being special, you know he wants to stick it to the Texans every time he is in his hometown.

Factors For Him Sitting.
Nature of His Injury. Often, you can’t get straight information from teams about injuries, so you have to look em up for yourself. From the appearance and description of his injury, and in my role playing fake doctor, it sounds like he had a second degree quadriceps strain. From what I’ve read about these, Young will be able to do normal activities, but may exacerbate his problem if he runs in a full sprint.

As Mario Williams knows, it is hard to own a Lamborghini and not drive it fast. Similarly, it would be difficult to put Vince Young in a AFC South battle in his home town, and expect for him to play it like a pocket passer.

Fisher’s Statements. Jeff Fisher said that Vince Young is going to trust what the doctors tell him.

Given Young’s annoyance in talking about his injury, I am guessing it is not likely he is going to play because he sounds like a guy who is grumpy about not playing. Don’t take my word for it, this doctor guy says that re-injury to the quad is a real possibility. Also the less time the injury has to heal, the more likely that re-injury could occur, or perhaps a worse injury. Even a basic look-see on the internet has tons of stories of these sorts of quad injuries gone bad. Like this one:

Resting may be the common sense approach, but it is one that is often ignored by competitive athletes. This is unwise, since it does not take much to turn a grade one Thigh strain into a grade two, or a grade two Thigh strain into a grade three.

Why? Because athletes feel like they can function with this sort of quad strain unless they try to do something like kicking or sprinting. I’m guessing a double-threat quarterback with a chronically bad wheel would not be something that Fisher would want to cause by starting Young. A grade three thigh strain is one that requires surgery.

I could, however, be completely wrong about this, and have an open mind. What do you think the Titans will do? Start or sit Young?

[FanHouse - Fantasy Football] Fantasy Football Players Can Breathe Easy: Statistics Are in the Public Domain

A court’s ruling Tuesday for CBC Distribution and Marketing and against Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association won’t change a thing. Fantasy players can continue to play, fantasy companies can continue to run their games, and no one needs to get the express written consent of sports leagues.

“Statistics are in the public domain,” says Greg Ambrosius, editor of Fantasy Sports Magazine.

But it’s a little chilling to think about the potential effects of the ruling having gone in favor of the sports leagues and the players (although it was the MLB and its union that was involved in this case, they had the support of legal briefs filed by all the major sports’ player associations and licensing arms).

Basically, the ruling going in the other direction would have meant that when LaDainian Tomlinson scores a touchdown, he and the NFL Players Association own the right to the fact that he scored that touchdown, and they’d have to be compensated by anyone who wants to report the fact that he scored that touchdown.

It would get rather ridiculous. Keeping statistics in the public domain is the most sensible ruling.

UPDATE: Two of my colleagues who know infinitely more about fantasy sports than I do have more information.

[Fantasy Football N’ Stuff] Chris Chambers in San Diego

Chris Chambers has less fantasy value in San Diego. I will not be scrambling to get him. In Miami, he leads the team in receiving yards. In San Diego, he will be lost in the bunch. Can you remember the last successful wide receiver to play for San Diego? It’s not because of the lack of wide receiver talent, just the game plan. They don’t need to throw with Tomlinson and Gates.

With so many offensive weapons, San Diego doesn’t need to throw many TDs. When they do, it’s generally not to a wide receiver. So far this season only 3 of 8 touchdowns have been to a wide receiver. Of the 17 total amount of touchdowns, 3 have been scored by wide receivers.

Last season 9 of 24 passing touchdowns were caught by receivers. If the stats hold true again (since the offense is almost identical, minus coaches) that means receivers should catch about 6 more touchdowns. Of those 6, I’d give at least two to Vincent Jackson, some to Buster Davis, where does Chris Chambers fit?

Chris Chambers should be worth the second round pick it took to get him. Eric Parker will not be able to return to the Chargers this season, and will be placed on the injured reserve.

Chambers could fit into the San Diego gameplan, but I would take a wait and see approach on him before putting any value on him.
