Meet The …
Most unpredictable fantasy team ever. If you want to try and sort through this mess with me, let’s give it a whirl. The QB is either going to Josh McCown, Chad Henne, or John Beck. Ronnie Brown has proven himself an elite fantasy back when healthy, but he’s coming off ACL surgery. His backup has reportedly been impressive in workouts thus far … and it’s the 31 year-old CFL-playin’ pot-smokin’ retirin’ to all things zen Ricky Williams. You want a piece of that on your team? Then you’ve got Cam Cameron’s favorite returner and a guy who had only 518 yards receiving for the Jags as the top two wideouts. So let’s break out the machete and slice through all this crap to the bare bones …

… this team is going to suck. Bill Parcells likes to break everything down and plan for the future. Even if the team heads into the season with McCown as the starter — as reports would suggest currently — the present will yield to the future sooner than later. If Parcells was sold on Beck, he wouldn’t have taken Henne with his second pick. Thus, by the halfway point (and probably the quarter-way point) Chad Henne is your QB. I don’t care that Parcells isn’t the actual head coach.

The Breakout
Henne, though he’ll hardly be ownable in fantasy unless you carry three QBs in a 14-16 owner league. I’m just putting him here because he’s going to exceed expectations and be the Dolphins QB of the future. Towards the end of the season it’s possible that a chemistry develops between him and his two top receivers, Ted Ginn and Ernest Wilford. By that point he may be a suitable injury replacement. It’s far, far too early to speculating, though. For now you must ignore him in nearly all formats.

The Bust
Ricky Williams, only because many people are discussing how great he supposedly looks in camp. Feel free to use him as a handcuff to Ronnie, but I won’t be paying even a last round pick for him. As Michael Scott once said, “Fool me once, strike one … fool me twice, strike three.” You can’t get fooled again!

The D/ST
Ugly City. They were dead last in D/ST points last year, and lost Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas. There were tweaks made in the secondary, but nothing large enough to impact the fact that you can’t waste a roster spot on this unit in fantasyland.

The Skinny
At least they are trying to start over from virtually scratch. There are better times ahead, but you won’t see those in 2008. Ronnie Brown is a quality second RB for your team, and he’s had sufficient time to heal.

As I alluded to earlier, the prospects of Henne to Wilford and Ginn via air are promising, starting in 2009 … especially with big Jake Long anchoring the offensive line.

The bottom line for the present, however, is that Brown is the only player draftable in fantasy football. You just can’t really justify anyone else unless you play in a huge league with a bottomless bench.

Carolina Panthers (1st in NFC South, 9th in Conference)
Without Jack Delhomme at quarterback last year, this group struggled. The return of Delhomme and the additions of first-round pick Jeff Otah up front and wide receivers Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett should help this group buy time for Steve Smith to be the centerpiece of the team once again.

New Orleans Saints (2nd in NFC South, 11th in Conference)
This team was dynamic two seasons ago, so the question is can they return to form or was that just a flash in the pan. They certainly have plenty of weapons on offense, but they’re going to have to be a lot meaner up front and control the line of scrimmage for the Saints to have success.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3rd in NFC South, 12th in Conference)
This group was battered by injuries and inconsistent play last year. The signing of Jeff Faine last year should help, but if Jon Gruden spent half the time finding offensive linemen as he does finding quarterbacks, the Bucs would be perennial contenders. With time to throw, even an average quarterback can be productive.

The Falcons have a lot of rebuilding to do, and their offensive line is in as much need of help as any other part of the team. Don’t spend big or draft high on Atlanta skill players, because top pick Matt Ryan is going to be running for his life.

I took a little bit of heat for taking Marion Barber at the No. 7 spot, but judging from the results of yesterday’s poll most people agree with the pick.

The top six picks go mostly as expected. I think most fantasy football owners will see those six guys go — in no particular order — in the top half of the first round. I thought Brian Westbrook should have gone a little higher than he did, but the arguments for Joseph Addai and Steven Jackson are solid.

The question marks definitely come up in the second half of the first round. Marion Barber, Frank Gore, Marshawn Lynch, Larry Johnson and Randy Moss are the riskiest of the picks, in my opinion. I like Clinton Portis as a safe pick this year. All those guys have tremendous upside, but I think we all know someone in that group is going to fizzle out this year. It happens every season.

I just hope, for my pride’s sake, that it is not Barber who fizzles.

13. Fantasy Football Librarian selects Reggie Wayne [WR, Colts]: Since I don’t like the value of really any of the RBs available at this point in the draft, with the 1.12 pick I will select Randy Moss and with the 2.01 pick I’ll take Reggie Wayne. I have complete faith that both of these receivers will play this season at an elite level; I can’t say the same for my running back options. Additionally, if you take a look at the RBs that are going around the 36th pick (when I’ll be picking again) based on ADP, I think the quality of RB there isn’t necessarily all that different than the quality of RB available now. I think this is a little bit of a gamble, but hey, that’s what a mock is for, right?

14. Fantasy Football Goat selects Terrell Owens [WR, Cowboys]: I feel the same way Sara (FFLibrarian) does. The runningback pool drops off some right here and I think I can get some some decent value later.

I was thinking QB with 6 points per TD but again, I think there will be some value in the later rounds. I am going to make sure I have a solid WR1 and take Terrell Owens before they get run on (long time ’til my next pick).

15. The Fantasy Football Geek Blog selects Ryan Grant [RB, Packers]: (Ed. note: These guys tried to steal Marion Barber with this pick, but conveniently forgot that I took him in the first round!). Luckily enough, there’s another guy I like almost as much as Marion Barber this season who’s still available (I swear) - Ryan Grant. I don’t think his contract holdout is a big issue. Had the Brett Favre saga not emerged, Grant would be back with the team by now. Green Bay’s offensive line is very solid, and as long as Aaron Rodgers proves serviceable (or, even better, if Favre were to somehow wind up playing for the Packers again), he’ll pick right back up where he left off last season as one of the most consistent fantasy point machines in football. …

16. Fantasy Football Fools select Braylon Edwards [WR, Browns]: I am tempted to take Brett Favre here with the 4th pick of the second round, but I’m just not 100%. I can’t believe you guys made me decide back in March who I was going to take here, and for that, I consider your entire lives an “untruth.”

I think I can catch a RB of the same value in the next round, so I’m going to make sure that I get an elite receiver since there seems to be a rush going for them here in the second round. Braylon Edwards was a TD machine last year with the Browns, and I expect him to still get the looks this year despite the addition of Donte Stallworth, the Casper of the 2007 Patriots.

17. Football Jabber selects Peyton Manning [QB, Colts]: Another tough spot in my slot. My first instinct is to go with a second RB here. That has been pounded into our heads for years, right? After my number crunching in last weeks article I found that the best thing to do is stray from the 2 RB theory and go with the best QB or WR in the second round.

After swaying on taking Peyton Manning eight picks ago and deciding against taking him in the first, I feel like I have to here. I have never been the “I have to have Peyton Manning” guy. Still not. There could be a big drop in QB talent a round from now and I feel a little obligated after everyone so kindly let him fall.

18. The Hazean selects Willis McGahee [RB, Ravens]: After taking Marion Barber in the first round with pick No. 7, I am face-to-face with my draft strategy now from this pick forward. Do I take on need or use the best available approach? Should I get another runningback to help secure the position or opt for a top-tier in another position?

In the past, I yielded to need. Always trying to secure a starting lineup at all costs, I sometimes overlooked the better values. But recently, I have been trying to draft — at least in the early rounds — based on value. Taking the best player available really can help you in the long run, even if the player does not get to start every week.

With that in mind, the best player available, according to my board, just happens to be runningback Willis McGahee. How convenient.

19. Bruno Boys select Brandon Jacobs [RB, Giants]: Aww, the decisions surrounding this pick have built up. With drafting Tom Brady in the first round, there are a lot of different avenues to take in round 2, but with the bulk of the depth being at the wide receiver position, you need to grab a RB before you are stuck with the likes of Edgerrin James, Willie Parker or Thomas Jones as your RB1.

With that being said, the guy we have been targeting (Willis McGahee) was taken one pick before it was our turn, therefore we change directions, head out to New York and take the big bruiser who wears Red & Blue, Brandon Jacobs. Over the seasons final 4 weeks, Jacobs rushed for 347 yards, added another 91 receiving yards and had 3 touchdowns down the stretch. The safer route might have been Maurice Jones-Drew, but we want a guy who will get his hands on the football 20+ times per game when healthy, and that guy is Jacobs.

20. West Coast Nonsense selects Larry Fitzgerald [WR, Cardinals]: Maurice Jones-Drew, Jamal Lewis and Ronnie Brown showed flashes of fantasy greatness last season, but I’m not sold that any of them are dependable enough to be a solid second-round pick. So, I’m grabbing Larry Fitzgerald.

21. Pancake Blocks select Andre Johnson [WR, Texans]: Like a lot of owners in this draft, I see wide receivers having the best value in the second round this season. I’ll take my question mark runners later. That made my pick easy: I have Andre Johnson ranked as my number two receiver.

AJ only missed three games in four seasons before last season, so I don’t see him as injury prone. I do see him as the most likely candidate to challenge Randy Moss for alpha dog status at receiver. He has a Fantasy MVP-type season in him, and this is his best chance because he actually has a supporting cast. He led wideouts in yards-per-game last year and I the Houston passing attack is a sleeping tiger.

22. Football Burrito selects Maurice Jones-Drew [RB, Jaguars]: Brutal, WR Andre Johnson is going to have a monster season if he can stay healthy and will compete with Moss and Reggie Wayne for being the # 1 WR overall.

MJD will put up good numbers in Jacksonville’s offense, he always gets the goal line carries and if Fred Taylor goes down (tick, tick, tick) MJD will put up LT numbers.

23. KUBIAK Draft Application selects Laurence Maroney [RB, Patriots]: With the 23rd overall pick, I’ll take Laurence Maroney, RB, NE. The Pats score lots of points and maybe Kevin Faulk’s Mary Jane confession makes it less of a crowded backfield. Maroney is 23 and young legs go a long way on a good team that can protect leads with a good D.

24. Curveballs 4 Jesus select Drew Brees [QB, Saints]: It’s back around to me, and I am going to take an elite quarterback before they are gone. I like four QBs in this spot: Carson Palmer, Tony Romo, Drew Brees, and Derek Anderson.

Carson would be great, but who knows what the Chad Johnson situation is going to bring in 2008. If he would just play football, life would be a great deal easier for the Bengals. Although Housh is a top-notch talent, I am going to pass on Palmer.

Romo is simply outstanding, although the only team in the NFL I hate more than Dallas is the Patriots. I can’t stand the Cowgirls, but they have a great receiving crew. T.O. is probably going to have another great year, which spells success for Romo on the field and in fantasy land. I just don’t see Romo throwing 36 touchdowns again like last year.

Next, Derek Anderson: I like what this guy did in 2007, and I honestly think he potentially has the best receiving corps in the game. He is going to throw a lot of touchdowns this year to Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, and Donte Stallworth. He is just unproven in my eyes, and as much as I want to take him here, I can’t do it (in my original draft for this pick, he was the guy I went with).

That only leaves one: Drew Brees.

Brees was my boy last year after he got over his slump in the beginning. He has put up huge numbers with over 4000 yards in the last two years with the Saints. His touchdowns were relatively static at 28. Going into week 6 last year, Brees only had one touchdown and around 900 yards passing … not to mention NINE FREAKING PICKS. What that means is in the last 12 games, he averaged about 300 yards and over two touchdowns, with less than one pick per game.

I don’t think he will struggle like he did at the beginning of last year, and some of his receivers have another year of NFL experience under their belt. So, two years running, I take Brees in the second round of Haze’s mock.

I’m not a heavy phone talker — when I was editor of this site, I bet Rick and I talked on the phone maybe four times in the three years we worked together — and I’ll always feel a little dorky text messaging, even if it’s generally accepted as commonplace now. No, the main reason I wanted an iPhone was to check baseball scores when I’m out. During the ill-fated ESPN Mobile fiasco, analysts openly wondered: Who is this mythical creature who needs constant sports scores when they’re away from home? I’m sad to say, during baseball season, I am that creature. My old phone had an antennae, for crissakes, and I’d still spend 15 minutes trying to get a half-hour-late Cardinals update from CBS Sportsline’s outdated “mobile” program. An iPhone was a necessary upgrade.

MLB.com has made a big PR push for its MLB At Bat application, which costs $4.95. At first glance, it’s awfully impressive; real-time scoring, updated automatically, with video highlights uploaded within minutes. (This allowed me to see Bill Hall gutpunches on successive evenings.) It sounds amazing, and among baseball media folk who understand what an iPhone is — this will exclude, say, Murray Chass — it’s garnering some glowing press.

It shouldn’t be; it actually kind of sucks.

This is not to trash MLB.com; those folks are awfully smart, and surely, any minute now, they’ll recognize just how inferior their product is and upgrade it. But as for now, it’s fairly pointless and not only not worth the $4.95, but not even as good as other, free iPhone applications.

First, the problems with MLB At Bat start with the video. Sure, it’s kind of cool to watch Ryan Ludwick homer 10 minutes after it happened, I guess, but the video quality is low, choppy and, of course, small. I mean, when you are watching MLB Gameday on your computer, is it that enthralling to watch video coverage of a home run you were informed of 15 minutes earlier? And that at least is high quality video. This is one of those ideas that sounds cooler in practice than in application.

But the real problem, and the reason MLB At Bat is a waste of $4.95, is that front page platform you see above there. You see, that’s all you get. What you see on that screen there. You get the inning-by-inning scoring, the count, the outs, the pitching matchup and whether anyone’s on base. That’s helpful information, and if I had no other options, man, I’d take it. But there’s no box score, no scoring recap, no way to check how your fantasy players are doing, no link to current standings, no context, no nothing. That’s all you get. I found myself continuously tapping that bottom screen, hoping a box score would pop up. Nope. I’m sure MLB.com is aware that these are serious deficiencies in its product, but until they’re addressed, they remain unsatisfactory.

This would all be typical “but give me MORE!” whining about MLB.com if there weren’t two applications available for the iPhone that provide everything that MLB.com does (minus the choppy videos) and address all their problems. And even better: They’re free. In the iTunes App Store, two programs, “SportsTap” and “LiveSportz,” provide real time, automatically updated scoring with box scores, fantasy stats, all of it. And to repeat: They don’t cost a dime. (To be fair, SportsTap was having some tech problems last night, problems MLB.com is notoriously excellent at avoiding.) Last night, while drinking mangotinis Wild Turkey, I brought up SportsTap, sat it on the bar and, when my bar companions happened to drop eye contact for a moment, looked down for updates on CC Sabathia’s dismantling of the Cardinals. All I had to do is glance, and I could tell exactly what’s going on. Not so with MLB At Bat.

I’m sure MLB.com will correct all these problems eventually, but right now, they’re charging $4.95 for a product that’s demonstratively inferior to products that cost nothing. It’s not as bad as when they charged people five bucks for the right to blog for them, but it’s close.

Meet The …
Youth movement. The Chiefs got old, fast, a few years ago and this year they had 12 draft picks. The once studly offensive line that made stars out of Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson broke down, and the QB position became a debacle. It’s just too early for this group to salvage anything of real consequence.

The Breakout
I’m gonna have to go with Jamaal Charles, but only because of the poor selection. He’s your handcuff to Johnson, not Kolby Smith, and he’s going to have a role in the offense even with Johnson healthy … to the point that Herm Edwards has hinted Charles will get 10-12 touches a game. He’s relegated to 2nd string behind LJ, so please don’t misconstrue his inclusion here as some sign that I think he’s a fantasy stud. Far from it. The fact of the matter is that there are only three usable fantasy players on this team, and none of them are undervalued heading into fantasy drafts. Charles is the next most likely fantasy commodity to emerge … it’s as simple as that.

The Bust
I believe the expectations are low enough here for most that there isn’t a bust per se, but be careful with LJ. With an ADP of 8th at RB right on now on MDC, I’m not loving the pick. He’s ahead of Clinton Portis, Marshawn Lynch, Ryan Grant, and Willis McGahee. I don’t like him to outperform any of those guys — especially Portis. That’s an absurd pick to select LJ above Portis. Johnson’s a quality #2 fantasy RB, but anything as high as 8th RB put him squarely in bust territory.

The D/ST
They rarely take the ball away, and they lost Jared Allen’s sacks. Top pick Glenn Dorsey is a defensive tackle, and their impact is more felt on a real level than fantasy. There aren’t enough playmakers here to consider this team any better than 25th. Translation: don’t bother.

The Skinny
On a positive note, the team received rave reviews for their draft. They are on the long road back to respectability, but you shouldn’t expect much production on a fantasy level outside of three players … LJ, Gonzalez, and Bowe. Gonzalez is still a top 5 TE, and Bowe fits nicely as a lower-tier 2nd WR. Charles is the only other player I’d consider owning on a fantasy team in 10-12 team leagues because of the potential he has to shine should LJ fall injured or unproductive.

Meet The …
Team coached by a man that hates you. Haven’t you heard? I don’t need to explain it any further to you, because it’s been done to death by every columnist on the planet. Basically — in case you are new to fantasy football — anytime you have counted on a back in the Denver system for the past five years or so, you have gotten screwed. If someone is supposedly going to start, they don’t get many carries. If someone is supposed to be the backup, Mike Shanahan uses someone else. Etc. Etc. Etc. This year there is a stable of at least four guys that can, on any given Sunday, produce huge fantasy numbers. So you should avoid the backfield …

The Breakout
… but here’s the thing: this theory of Shanahan hating fantasy football has become so played and mainstreamed, any Broncos RB is going to be stigmatized in your fantasy draft. Travis Henry had the jaws of life locked on this job last year until injuries and a drug suspension derailed him. I’m going for it and naming Selvin Young the breakout of this team. He’s got the job now, and he’ll keep the job all year … in a sure sign of apocalypse.

The Bust
Brandon Marshall had 102 catches for 1325 yards and seven TDs last year. He was also the recipient of the most targets in the NFL. Of course, he also likes to show up on the police blotter. You know who doesn’t like that? Roger Goodell. Look, even if Marshall avoids suspension, you can’t like him to repeat those stellar numbers in a predominantly running offense, especially in a division that stops the pass so well. Don’t pay for the numbers, otherwise he’ll make you pay.

Nothing overly exciting here. Sure, Champ Bailey is a stud … he also only picked it off three times last year. He’s a better real player than fantasy, and he alone is enough to make this unit overrated. They were 24th in points last year in my league (again, defensive points vary from league to league, but should be generally comparable). Don’t expect much of an improvement. Ignore.

The Skinny
Cutler’s got plenty of receiving options with all the new additions, but no one is particularly exciting for this season. I’ve seen him ranked as high as tenth, and I believe that would be a big-time mistake. He’s more suited as a backup QB spot-starter — you certainly don’t want to count on him against the Raiders or Chargers, for example.

Scheffler is a startable TE in any league and should be quite a solid late pick … as long as he gets healthy.

Have fun deciding how to handcuff Young. The best move is probably just to not waste a roster spot and wait on the waiver wire situation in shallow leagues. In deep ones, I’d go with Pittman and always be ready to make a switch via the wire.

Also, the receiving corps is a mess behind Marshall. Any of the guys listed above could prove to be a bust or a quality pick. I don’t like drafting “coulds” or “maybes.”

Lots of unknowns, but the one thing you do know? They will run the football, and they will run it well. Thus, I’m loving Selvin Young.
